When we think of a kitchen island with stools it may conjure in our minds a picture of a traditional family gathered around some well-worn wooden kitchen stools sipping eggnog during the holidays. It might remind you of your aunt or uncle in the suburbs who bought a set of kitchen bar stools hoping that would modernize their very outdated kitchen.

Maybe you remember an old kitchen step stool you used as a child to reach the upper cupboards where grandma hid the cookies. But kitchen stools need not be any of those things.

If you're single, perhaps decorating your first apartment, loft or studio, and want to create a comfortable yet modern place to share with friends and do a little entertaining don't rule out the coolness of a kitchen stool or two. In fact a well chosen set of seats may be all the furniture you need, aside from a bed, of course.

Consider these decorating options:

1. A retro kitchen stool (or two) with a lime green, tangerine or cherry red vinyl seat cover beside a tall wrought iron table or bar.

2. Breakfast bar stools with plush pink seats pulled up alongside the windowsills for martinis with a view.

3. Some simple swivel kitchen stools with a cowhide print or zebra pattern seat in the living room instead of sofa and chairs. Add a throw rug, some toss cushions on the floor and a funky lamp and you're done!

4. Two red bar stools beside an ordinary kitchen counter, a blender, a tall glass or two and you're set for morning smoothies or wheatgrass juice.

5. Four black bar stools placed just about anywhere, your favorite sports posters on the walls, even a naked lady or two, a dish of peanuts, oh... and a plasma TV, and you can have sports night with the guys.

6. For a poker theme or billiards room style loft all you need are a few second hand oak bar stools. Well, a pool table helps to complete the look, but you could improvise by getting some cues and a rack to hang on the walls.

Kitchen stools need not be the mildewed step stools in your Aunt Mildred's house, nor the plain-Jane bar set in Dick and Jane's basement. Pick your style. It's your home after all!
